In Depth Look at the Fleece Study Part 1

Friday, February 3, 2017

Today marks the first in a series of posts in which we are going to look at an in depth explanation of all the breeds in the fleece study. Generally I spun rather thin, but I tried to spin how ever the wool felt comfortable.
To start we are going to look at the Cheviot family of breeds.

The above image is the Cheviot. This was a carded sample that was spun woolen. It has a somewhat scratchy feel to it and is relatively white. There are some guard hairs in it, which adds to the scratchy factor.

This next sample is the North County Cheviot. The left is woolen spun from roll lags and the right is spun from hand pulled top sliver. You can see in the detail photos that they quite different. The woolen is fluffy and makes the ply a little difficult to see, while the ply is very clear.

Stay tuned for the next post where we look at the wild examples of the Blackfaced family and the Down Family!
