Old Niagara Outfitters was established to help people find, create, and work with historical clothing.
Through this website I will share research in print and from the web to help others get a better understanding of historical clothing. This site will give you creative ideas, new facts and projects, and a better understanding of how fashion got to where it was, where it is, and where it will go.
My name is Benjamin Streeter. I am a clothing designer and fashion historian living in Buffalo, New York. Fashion, sewing, needlecrafts are all my life. I try and find inspiration through everything.
Historical clothing and sewing is my true passion. I studied theater at Buffalo State College. While I was there I focused primarily on costume design and construction. It was in the collegiate world that I found my true passion; researching historical fashion.
I had many wonderful opportunities from going to Buffalo State College. I learned quite a lot from my professors and now colleagues Ann Emo and Erica Fire. One of my first opportunities was my internships that I had with the Glimmerglass Opera Festival. It was here that I learned a lot about dress making from the Draper Robert Ritter. After that, I was an intern in the principles costume shop at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. I have dreamed about working there since I was a child and I am so glad I was able to fulfill that dream; however I didn't feel quite at home in the Big Apple.
When I was a Junior at Buffalo State I received one of their Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships. It was through this opportunity that I worked with the Historical Society of the Tonawandas. Over the summer I worked as the curator for their costume and textile collection. I continue to help them with their collection in cataloging, mounting installations, and researching their over 5,000 piece collection.
Since graduating in 2012 I have worked as a freelance clothing designer in the Buffalo area. I have worked with many theaters including the Irish Classical Theater Company as well as many individuals for wedding gowns, custom suits, individual costumes, and female impersonators.
